Why Jebena Joy Cafe?
At Jebena Joy Cafe, my mission is to bring this beautiful tradition to America, offering a taste of the culture, history, and connection that the coffee ceremony represents. As an immigrant from Eritrea, I have seen firsthand the power of coffee to bring people together. Growing up, the coffee ceremony was a daily ritual in my family’s home. My mother would prepare coffee with love and care, inviting neighbors and friends to join us. It was a moment to reconnect, to laugh, to share stories, and to create bonds that strengthened our community.
When I came to the United States as an asylum seeker, I wanted to carry these traditions with me. The coffee ceremony became a way for me to hold on to my roots while building new connections in a new country. Through Jebena Joy Cafe, I aim to share this experience with people here, offering not just a cup of coffee but a journey into the heart of Eritrean and Ethiopian culture.
Every word in the name holds significance: ጄበና ጄዮይ ካፌ
• Jebena refers to the traditional clay pot used in Eritrean and Ethiopian coffee ceremonies, symbolizing the heart of this cultural practice.
• Joy represents the happiness and warmth I strive to bring to every coffee ceremony, creating meaningful and joyful experiences for my guests.
• Cafe is not just about coffee, but about the communal aspect of it—where people gather, converse, and share special moments.
I’m proud to carry this tradition forward with my business, bringing the rich heritage of Eritrean and Ethiopian coffee culture to events across Los Angeles. I can’t wait to share this experience with you!
