Bio

Hey there!

My name is Menal  Kidane, and I was born and raised in Asmara, Eritrea, where community and hospitality are at the heart of everyday life. One of the most beautiful expressions of this is the traditional coffee ceremony, an essential part of our culture. In Eritrea, coffee isn’t just a drink; it’s a ritual that brings people together, often lasting for hours. My mother would begin the ceremony by roasting fresh coffee beans over a small fire, their aroma filling our home and signaling that guests were welcome. The ceremony wasn’t complete without the gathering of neighbors, family, and friends, who would sit together, talk, laugh, and share stories. It was a way of showing love, respect, and gratitude.

The coffee ceremony in Eritrea is more than a tradition—it’s a bridge that connects people. It’s about slowing down, being present, and creating a sense of belonging. Every cup served is a reminder of the importance of community, and the value of making time for one another. I grew up surrounded by this warmth, and it’s a tradition I’ve carried with me through life’s ups and downs.

Six years ago, I fled Eritrea, seeking asylum in the United States. I came with nothing but my memories of home and a deep desire to find safety. The transition was not easy—I spent months in detention before being granted asylum, and starting over in a new country was filled with challenges. But I never let go of the values I grew up with. I found strength in my heritage, and especially in the coffee ceremony, which became my way of reconnecting with home even when I was far away.

Earlier this year, I founded Jebena Joy Cafe, inspired by the same coffee traditions I grew up with. My goal is to bring this beautiful part of Eritrean and Ethiopian culture to the U.S., to create a space where people can experience the warmth, love, and connection that a coffee ceremony brings. Through Jebena Joy, I hope to introduce Americans not just to coffee, but to the spirit of hospitality that comes with it. Whether it’s a family gathering or a corporate event, every ceremony I host is a moment to slow down, appreciate the present, and build connections with those around us.

When I brew coffee, I’m not just making a drink. I’m creating a shared experience, much like the one I grew up with. In each cup, I hope to share a piece of my story, my culture, and my love for bringing people together.
